This year from May 17th-19th, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) program, International Roadcheck, took place from May 17th through May 19th – with a focus on wheel ends.
What is International Roadcheck?
International Roadcheck is a 72-hour high-visibility, high-volume commercial motor vehicle inspection and enforcement initiative conducted by the CVSA.
Additionally, throughout North America, commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct North American Standard Inspections of commercial motors vehicles and drivers at weigh and inspection stations, on roving patrols, and at temporary inspection sites, the CVSA details in their report.
Results of International Roadcheck 2022
Throughout the three days of the Roadcheck, certified inspectors conducted 59,026 inspections and placed 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 3,714 commercial motor vehicle drivers out of service, data shows. The most common vehicle violations were for brake systems, tires, defective service brakes, lights, and cargo securement.
Additionally, nearly 2,000 drivers were put out of service due to false logs, while 1,000 were cited for driving with the wrong class license – FleetOwner reports.
Level I inspections are a comprehensive 37-step inspection process that involves strict inspection of the vehicle, as well as underneath it and the driver’s operating credentials.
Data from the CVSA shows:
- A little over 36,000 Level I Inspections were conducted in Canada and the U.S., of those 23.7% of the vehicles (8,672) inspected were placed out of service, while a little over 6% (2,242) of drivers were placed out of service.
Level V inspections for International Roadcheck, include the inspection of each of the vehicle items that are listed under the North American Standard Level I Inspection. Furthermore, they can also be conducted without a driver presented. over 1,150 inspections were conducted by inspectors in Mexico.
Data from the CVSA shows:
- Inspectors in Mexico conducted 1,150 Level V Inspections. Additionally, 36 commercial motor vehicles were placed out of service.
Wheel Ends – the focus of this year’s International Roadcheck
This year the focus of International Roadcheck was on wheel ends. Wheel end parts help support the heavy loads that are carried by commercial motor vehicles, maintain stability and control, and are critical for breaking – the CVSA defines.
Additionally, there were 18,213 total vehicle out-of-service violations of those, 3,374 received tire out-of-service violations – which account for 18.5% of all vehicle out-of-service violations. There were also 784 wheel out-of-service violations, CVSA details.
Vehicles that do not receive any critical vehicle inspection item violations, after a Level I or V inspection, are able to be eligible to receive a CVSA decal.
Furthermore, the decal is an indicator that shows inspectors that the vehicle has passed inspection. It is valid for up to three consecutive months after the inspection took place.
