Trucking Update

First snowstorm of the season is on its way for the Rockies through midweek.

This will primarily be a mountain snow event, with a few snowflakes potentially reaching the lower-lying valleys, reported by Nick Austin Freightwaves Meteorologist. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado are also looking at some snowy weather this week. The National Weather Service is predicting 1 to 2 feet of snow to pile up. Drivers should be aware of the travel conditions as wind gusts will hit 35 to 50 mph in some places paired with blowing snow can produce white out conditions.

    • Some major lanes of concern:
      • Interstate 25 from Casper to Buffalo, Wyoming.
        • Interstate 70 from Vail to Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
        • Interstate 80 in southeastern Wyoming.
        • Interstate 90 from Sundance, Wyoming, to Bozeman, Montana.

Rail Update
  • Norfolk Southern has reopened the Kentucky Intermodal Terminal which will add terminal capacity to the growing Louisville market, Norfolk Southern stated. This terminal will be open only for inbound traffic coming from the Norfolk International Terminals in Virginia and the Portsmouth APM Terminals at the Virginia International Gateway in Norfolk, reported by Freightwaves.
  • S. intermodal rail traffic has decreased in September in part of supply chain congestion. U.S. intermodal volumes for September this year were 1.33 million containers and trailers, a 6.7% decline from September 2020. With limited availability of downstream truck and warehouse capacity, keeping intermodal terminals efficient and running smoothly, while at full capacity is not currently happening. All in all, U.S. rail traffic was down by almost 2% year-over-year in September.
