Back in 2017, Mangrove Partners acquired seven container ships when values were low (pre-COVID) and now because of the current market conditions (and a case of good luck), the container-ship values have dramatically exploded. Now according to Freightwaves it has been reported that they sold six of them at extremely high prices.

The fun and intriguing part about this news is once Mangrove purchased its ships, they decided to rename them after former or current members of the historically dominant New England Patriots. If you are not familiar with the history of the New England Patriots, Coach Bill Belichick and former Patriots Quarterback, Tom Brady (who is now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), made the Patriots a dynasty in the NFL and have won 6 super bowls together.

Trucking Update

Mexico reports more than 5,000 cargo thefts in the first half of 2021

It is important for carriers to think about including satellite tracking devices and highway monitoring devices on roads in high-crime areas. From the first half of 2021, 5,260 cargo trucks were robbed nationwide according to Mexico’s Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). The central region in Mexico had the highest number of cargo theft cases overall at 55%, followed by the western part of Mexico at 29% according to Freightwaves. The majority of the goods stolen involved food and beverage.

Pro-Vision Video Systems, is a company that focuses on providing fleet managers technology to see their loads in real-time and create recordings of theft or damage to the cargo. With the use of motion-detection and night-vision technologies, this provides fleet managers to be alerted to any damage or theft that takes place to their cargo. Andrew Beach, a director of sales at Pro-Vision Video Systems told FleetOwner that they are able to record anything that happens inside and outside of the vehicle, whether it is moving or parked.

Having satellite tracking devices and highway monitoring devices is a huge benefit for carriers to continue to implement. Not only will it keep recordings of potential theft or damage, but it allows carriers to have peace of mind knowing their cargo is being transported and protected as best it can.

Rail Update

New Intermodal Project to Enhance Container Capacity on the Indiana Railroad, expected to be done in 2023.

Indiana Rail Road  has started the first phrase of their multiyear expansion of intermodal facilities for customers that want service to and from the Indianapolis market and Canadian and U.S. West Coast ports, with an anticipated completion date of 2023. The first phase includes ground preparation as well as the installation of concrete inbound-outbound traffic lanes with a kiosk gate system for expedited handling.

The Indiana Rail Road told Freightwaves that the first phase includes the addition of 12 acres of land adjacent to INRD’s container yard, which will more than double the container yard footprint. Also includes an onsite chassis depot and allows a generous amount of incremental parking capacity and flexibility. The following phases will include two loading pad tracks and rear access service roads, in addition to install lighting and high-security fencing.
